So I was trying out the Find a time feature in Google Calendar and I’m just wondering why Google isn’t catching stuff like this.

So I click get started and then this little modal window pops up and says “The Find a time feature helps you schedule events easily. This brief tour will show you all of the basic features of the Find a time page. Click here to start.” Well then I click “Here” I get this message. “Sorry, we can’t guide you right now. Please try again later.”

Please just post a message that says. “The Find a time feature is currently in maintenance and should be back in XX hours.” I mean if this is just not working then don’t tease me by giving me this great blue button to click and then a modal window and then throw an error. Waste of my time people.

Click the link above to give it a go maybe you have better luck in a 3…10…maybe 24 hours. Who knows.

I just wanted to go ahead and say it. The iPhone 4S is nothing spectacular and I love Apple, but this isn’t the most amazing update to the iPhone line. Don’t get me wrong I see where they’re going with this. It’s the same phone I have in my hand now but a better camera, faster chip set and will run iOS 5 a lot smoother I would imagine. Ok, so it is different technically but I digress. It’s the typical iterative process that Apple does to make their products evolve with the consumer. The one thing I’m juiced about is Siri. It’s not just your regular voice command it’s a freaking HAL 9000 in your pocket.

“What are you doing Dave, Clicking the read more button?”

I get excited to think how awesome the world would be when I can talk to a device and it will react with a unique response based on my words. Some will argue, “This has been done before!” or “I have this on my Android device.” and I’ll answer with a polite, “No it hasn’t and no you don’t”. Apple has obviously been working on this for awhile and obviously Apple knew what they were doing back in 2010 when they purchased the company “Siri”. I’m pretty sure this is going to evolve into an even more amazing Apple product, that we’ll see on all of their “Devices”. Keep in mind Apple has now considered their laptops to be a “Device” now.

It reminds me of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home when they had to save some whales from extinction because apparently this Alien ship could only communicate with a certain type of whale. So the Aliens were threatening earth because this whale was extinct and they could not connect with these whales. So the Star Trek Enterprise traveled back in time to save these whales from earth, to save earth…ok, I am a nerd. But seriously there was a part in the movie where Scotty picks up the mouse of this old Mac and says, “Computer?”. Cracked me up. Enjoy the video.

Ok…back to my point. This is happening folks and it’s going to be done in a great conversational flow that Siri will feel like your own personal assistant. My guess is that this will be the flagship feature for the iPhone 4S but I’m pretty certain it will come out on the iPad 2. Honestly I wouldn’t put it past Apple to sell it as an app for the older iPhone 4′s or something like that. Only Apple holds the key to it’s release on other devices and some Russian kid who Jailbreaks the iPhone 4S on day 1.

Anyways I think this is a home run for Apple what are your thoughts?

So my friend Brian (AKA Mr. Nifty and Awesome WordPress Developer) showed we this little web app that is so simple but yet so useful. This application is called WorkFlowy, cute huh? Well basically it’s an app that allows users to quickly craft up a basic textual task flow in an outline format. Surprisingly it’s so easy to use that you can quickly draft up a software application flow with just a few key strokes. I mean at first glance I thought it was silly but after playing with it for a bit it’s actually pretty easy to use. Super easy and simple, give it a try! Did I mention it was free?

When I heard the news yesterday about Steve Jobs resigning as the CEO of Apple I was really sad. We’ve watched one of the most incredible business stories unfold before our eyes when Steve came back to Apple in 1997, which was on the verge of bankruptcy. Then in 14 years he makes Apple one of the most profitable companies in the world. What an incredible business story and what a legacy he leaves on his resignation as CEO of Apple.

I can’t explain how proud I am that I was apart of the original product line when OS X was first released. I am so thankful for you and your innovation because you sir have changed the world forever. Apple will never be the same with out you as the CEO Mr. Jobs. I think you are one of the most intelligent people on this planet and it has been a pleasure to use your companies products. I can only hope to be as intelligent, business savvy and rock a black mock turtle neck like you do. Thank you.

OS X Lion is here and like David in the Lion’s den I am thrilled to be face to face with this Lion. Though I think David was probably about to crap his pants he did have God on his side and us Apple fan boys have Steve Jobs.

I am really enjoying this new version of OS X and it really is exciting to see where the user interface is heading. I really do believe that we’ll see either an iPad with OS X Lion on it or a touch interface iMac, or both! So I want to discuss my top 8 features of OSX Lion that I find useful and well down right awesome.

8. Safari and Gesture Navigation

With Lion comes some new features in Safari and some new Gesture Navigation. Navigating backwards and forward is so effortless and it feels very natural. They’ve also added a very similar single finger double tab, much like the iPods, iPhones and iPads for some crisp zoom functionality. Don’t be confused with the already known Control + Scroll because this is much better.

7. Mail, Contacts and Calendar Accounts

I love that Apple has finally setup a single area where I can enter in my accounts for email, contact and calendars. This is just so much easier than having to set it up in each program. I’m really excited to start using my .me account with iCloud because my “device” will be all setup to sync to the cloud.

6. Air Drop

This is like the dropbox for local Macs. I can easily share files between other OS X Lion users with just the drop of a file in the Airdrop folder. This will be great for our team when we meet up in person for any file sharing that we do…which is a lot because Brian does a lot of singing and Mp3′s are created all the time.

5. Auto Correction Text

A lot like the iPods, iPhones and iPads it has a great quick feature that allows to quickly adjust a word. It will underline it in blue instead of red to notify you that is has been changed. Also if you back space to the end of the word, as expected, the system will display the word you actually spelled so that you can retrieve it. I love this because sometimes I make typos, ok…I make a lot of typos. I’m just so quick to click the send button and now that OS X Lion fixes that for me.

4. Group/Merge Multiple Selected Folders

Group…Merge whatever you want to call it this is obviously closer to #1 so it’s pretty amazing folks. I’ve been asking for a feature like this for a long time. Having the ability to select two folders and merge/group them is just amazing and having a very Project Management oriented role for my work it is VERY important for me to have my files organized. A+ on this little gold nugget.

3. Preview Application

Oh Wow…just wow. They have taken Preview and just filled with a hot cup of awesome. The interface hasn’t been completely overhauled just has so many additional features added to Preview specifically in the annotation area. So many options to annotate your documents. The ability to add basic drag and drop notes makes this an immediate addition to a Creative Director or a Quality Assurance Managers tool kit. I’ll probably be using this a little more often now.

There is also this new signature feature and it’s just wickedly awesome. I sign a lot of documents, I mean a lot. If it’s not NDA’s or client executed agreements it’s sign offs or engagement letters. It’s really important that I can do that quickly and get Lift’s projects moving as soon as possible. I simply place my Herby Hancock on a peace paper, hold it up to my iSight and boom! I’ve got a digital copy of my signature stored in preview. This allows me to sign documents right away and get those sent to the client. Who needs a scanner anyway! Fax machine what?

2. Launchpad

This is just replacing my stack I had made of the applications folder. It screams touch interface for the next iMac. Or maybe an iPad with OS X Lion on it. Mark my words a touch interface iMac is coming.

I really like this because it allow me to keep my dock clean for the important stuff that has badges and stuff like that. It also is very easy to group applications in your own organized way. Much like iPods, iPhones and iPads it works the exact same way. Long press on an application they start to shake and you can remove them. Very cool addition and I’m excited to see a OS X Lion iPad and or a touch interface iMac in the future.

1. Mission Control

Last but not least Mission Control. Not only is it a new and refined way to managing open applications on multiple desktops, it’s gotta bad sweet name. I really like how easy it is to quickly see what’s happening in all the spaces. It’s just great to have icons associated with everything as well. A lot of apple apps can look similar, the icon is a great visual representation to a user’s eye to quickly determine what app it is. I also like the idea of creating multiple work spaces for each individual desktop. Another cool thing I found out is that you can change the background for each desktop area. So you could create a codex cheat sheet or maybe a keyboard short cut cheat sheet background and quickly reference your desktop image. Just a thought.

Overall this feature is so natural to use and the way they designed the gestures it is just ridiculously easy.

So that’s my list and I’m sticking to it.

I recently read this article on Daily Finance titled Tattoos: An Oddly Recession-Proof Industry. In the story they interview a woman who had her tattoos removed because she was afraid of it affecting her job.

I’m just curious who may feel that having a visible tattoo could affect their job opportunity? I myself have a half sleeve tattoo and a few others on my biceps and I have had plans to finish both of my arms. I feel that my tattoos express my artistic side as all of my of my tattoos are religious based. Though now that I have children I’ve had second thoughts about it all.

What are your thoughts on tattoos? Do you feel that it could affect an interview? Do you feel people think of you differently because of some art on your arm? Do you plan on removing them to avoid any of these types of situations mentioned in the article? Really curious about this.

I just watched this video of Dr. Susan Weinschenk discussing the ROI of user experience. She couldn’t have hit the nail on the head any better. I can’t express how important it is for companies to capture the requirements in the beginning. Communication is key and if you do not know what your building or who your building it for, your ROI on user experience will not be very high.

Thanks to David Ortinau on his tweet for this.
